back with us. why was the fbi involved? >> reporter: well, victor, a u.s. official tells cnn the fbi was investigating a tip that david petraeus was involved in an extramarital affair with paula broadwell. she is his biographer. broadwell spent a year with petraeus in afghanistan interviewing him for the book she co-wrote about him. it's not clear whether broadwell is the woman with whom petraeus has admitted to having this affair that led to this resignation. the official says that the fbi counterintelligence unit investigated the tip to see if there was a potential security risk, whether petraeus could possibly be blackmailed. the official tells cnn there was no suggestion the fbi was investigating petraeus for any possible wrongdoing, but the concern, rather, was that he might be putting himself in a vulnerable position. >> we know that a lot of the questions from online that i've read, some of the comments on cnn.com, there's questions about the timing. let's start with what it comes after, the presidential election. what if we found out about that connection, if any, and why

good job. >> let's talk specifically about your state, virgina. key swing state. you were on cnn "starting point" the morning of the election, just yesterday morning. you were asked by soledad what signs you would be looking for of a romney win in virginia. >> i would look for the beltway counties around washed, loudon, fairfax, prince william. if governor romney were to win fairfax, prince william county and hold his own and stay close in fairfax, to me that would be a great signal that he's going to win the state. >> as i mentioned, i was reporting in those counties last night, prince william county which went for obama essentially the same percentage it did in 2008, winning all those counties you mentioned. what would you say are the big lessons you learned from your state about this loss for romney last night? >> there was a piece of good news. we won eight out of the 11 congressional races, kate, in virginia. at the more local level, republicans did very well. we've got more work to do in the northern virginia beltway. i was fortunate to do well there in 2009. those are the

official with knowledge of the case tells cnn today that the former cia chief is expected to tell lawmakers he suspectedalmost immediately that the attack was the work of an al-qaeda affiliate but the official says there was other intelligence about 20 reports suggested an antiislamic movie may have been to blame for the attack. for those reports as far as they go they were disproved but that happened after petraeus' initial briefing to congress. he is also expected to tell lawmakers he had no direct involvement with the talking points used by u.s. ambassador susan rice in the days following the attack. as you may know she's been under fire for suggesting the attack was sparked by spontaneous protest he against the antimuslim film. now let's go one day back yesterday, we did see house hearings on the specific issue happening and we know lawmakers they looked at video surveillance video and say that it helped them fill in the blanks of what happened on september 11th. >> is there word about another investigation possibly involving general petraeus? >> reporter: yeah there's word th
